What Finland Can Teach America About True Luxury

New York – What is true luxury? Just when I thought I'd settled on my answer – a flat-screen TV the size of Kansas and a leather-upholstered car that can travel at triple the speed limit – I made several visits to Finland. Shortly after my return the financial crisis hit. Finland has been on my mind ever since. In these hard times, we could learn a few things about luxury from the Finns.
Strolling the streets of Helsinki, the capital, I noticed a lack of grand architecture and opulent homes, and an abundance of modest cars. Helsinki was a nice enough city, and it had some gems of modern design, but part of me felt that Finland was a bit dull. And, strangely, some of the Finns I met seemed to take pride in this.
Finland seemed even duller on my next visit in July. The weather was glorious, but Helsinki felt like a ghost town. I learned that most Finns take a five-week summer vacation, and that many of them disappear for the entire time to tiny, bare-bones cottages in the woods. Curious, I wrangled an invitation to visit one of these secluded cabins. It was meticulously cared for, but lacked any creature comforts. I quickly realized that there was nothing to do and no one to see.
After a couple of days at the cabin I was a convert. It was marvelously relaxing, and I realized the Finns were on to something – a form of luxury that had little to do with high-end products, the quest to acquire them, or the need to show them off. While some Finns pursue the material trappings of success, most seem to feel that the pleasures of time and solitude are more precious.
During my visits, I met some North American expats, including a Canadian who'd lived in the US for years. "I talk to friends back in North America," he told me, "and they tell me about all the latest toys they've bought. Here I'm just puttering away on my little house like a Finn, and that's about it. The pace of life is slower. I like that."
Americans in Finland shared similar sentiments. But they weren't naive about the place, and there was a reason they weren't buying the latest toys. "I'll never become rich in Finland," one explained, "the taxes are just too high." But for him it was a trade-off worth making. "Great healthcare, basically free. My kids get one of the best educations in the world, free." By the way, that includes college, free. He had no plans to move back to the States.
As I spent more time in Helsinki, my own notion of the luxuries available in Finland expanded to include more than just the quiet pleasures of a cabin getaway. Finnish cities are filled with universally well-maintained and high-quality schools, hospitals, buses, trains, and parks. While most Finns might never be able to own a well-appointed SUV or a big house, they value the less-tangible assets they do have, which add up to quality of life and peace of mind.
Finland doesn't pay lip service to providing a level playing field for all its citizens. It really does give the vast majority of its citizens a fair and equal chance in life, in a way that the US just doesn't, no matter how much Americans like to think it does.
Finland has its downsides, of course. The Finns I met described high rates of depression and alcoholism among their countrymen, and admitted that many Finns seem to suffer from low self-esteem. When I returned to the dynamic bustle of New York, I was happy to be back, even with the financial crisis decimating the economy.
Compared with Finns, Americans have qualities I admire and treasure: optimism, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a willingness to be opinionated, for starters. These qualities will help us fight our way back to economic health.
But let's face it: The single-minded pursuit of outsized material consumption helped get us into this mess. As we struggle to get back on our feet, perhaps we should pause for our own "Finnish moment."

The Rescue Is Still Going, Sadly
The Rescue on Saturday was really awesome. We marched through Downtown, I hung out with Haley Alayra and cool SPU peeps, and we were rescued... early. I was thinking about going with the Rescue Riders to Spokane, since they had not been Rescued at the time; I decided against it since I had three mid-terms this week. Something in me wishes that I had went.
The Rescue has not been completed. Chicago is the only town left. The Mogul list includes:

The Rescue Is Happening
The RESCUE is this Saturday, April 25. If you don't know what I'm talking about, Joseph Kony has been using child soldiers to destory Uganda for over 15 years, and we're stopping it.
If you're in Orange County:
Meet at the OC Fairgrounds Gate 4 at 3:00 pm. From there, everyone will be walking around Costa Mesa and returning back to the Fairgrounds, staying overnight. Parking is $5 at the Fairgrounds. You will wait there until you are rescued by one politician, one celebrity, and, most importantly, one media member who will be getting the message out. Among the expected politicians and celebrities includes Senator Barbara Boxer, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Congress reps (i.e. Linda Sanchez, Dana Rohrabacher, etc.), Ben McKenzie, Pete Carroll, Matt Costa, and others.

Meet at Denny Park on the corner of Denny Way and Dexter Ave. at 3:00 pm. From there, everyone will be walking past the Space Needle to Myrtle Edwards Park. Among the expected politicians and celebrities includes Senator Maria Cantwell, Senator Patty Murray, Congress reps (i.e. Jim McDermott, Adam Smith, etc.), Mayor Greg Nickels, Bill and Melinda Gates, Ben Gibbard, Howard Schultz, Matt Hasselback, and others.

The hope is that the message will get out. On the way to our final destinations we will be writing our local politicians. Secondly, when the celebrities and politicians come to the final destinations, the media will come to. In effect, the message will finally get into the mass media. People will know about it and demand change. I'm excited and you should be, too. Pray about it, bring your friends, get involved, bring your mom, bring your ukulele, help out.

India 2009 Prayer Letter
Dear Friends and Family,
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ! The last few months have been ridiculous! In September, I packed everything I have into two bags and moved to Seattle as a student at the University of Washington. At school, I have been involved with Christian apologetics, psychology research, and the college ministry at Mars Hill Church, my local church.
As part of a team of about 10 people, I will be traversing to India in July of 2009. India is large country in South Asia. This culturally diverse country is home to about a billion people and the world's highest mountain range, the Himalayas.
This missions trip is part of what is known as the P.E.A.C.E. plan, an outreach effort to attack the “five global giants.” They include spiritual emptiness, corrupt leadership, poverty, disease, and illiteracy. This initiative was created to:
P - Promote Reconciliation
E - Equip Leaders
A - Assist The Poor
C - Care For The Sick
E - Educate The Next Generation
Our main goal is to share the love of Christ with the people of India. Our team will be working with churches, visiting orphanages and slum areas, and, possibly, meeting some members of local cults.
There are two ways in which you can be of great assistance. First, PRAY! Pray that we will keep our ears open to what the Lord has called us to do. Also, pray that the team will be God’s ambassadors and honor him with our thoughts, deeds, actions, and words while we are in India. As bond servants to the Lord, pray that we would be a united group with one goal: to love God and to love others.
A second way that you can help is through financial support. All support goes directly towards the funds of the trip, and no where else. The trip is an estimated $3014. Any support would be greatly appreciated. Obviously, this is a substantial amount, but I put my trust in God who transcends money; I know that he will provide for my needs. Please realize that this money is going to be used to share the love and Good News of Jesus Christ with the people of India.
If God leads you to give something financially, small or large, please make it payable to Saddleback Church. Do not include my name in the memo area; in this way, it will be tax deductible. Please send your contributions in an enclosed envelope to my address (e-mail me for my address: didyouseethatt@yahoo.com). Once given to me, I will deliver it directly to the church. I must raise $300 by March 8, an additional $1800 by May 1st, and, finally, $950 by June 1.
